Eritrean Public Health Association Hosted Scientific conference





The Eritrean Public Health Association (EriPHA) successfully hosted its third scientific conference on July 13, 2024, under the theme "Strengthening Public Health Research for Tomorrow's Challenges." The conference showcased a diverse range of research, with 11 papers presented on topics including tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria, maternal and child health, hepatitis C, and dermatology.

Some of the presented papers were:

1. Estimating National Burden of Disease from 1993-2019 in Eritrea using the metric of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs): finding from the global burden of Disease Study 2019 by Mr Teweldemedhin Gebrejesus

2. Presentation and health care delay and associated factors among Tuberculosis patients in Eritrea: Country-wide analytical cross-sectional study by Mr Zenawi Zeremariam

3. Real world Treatment outcome of direct acting antivirals and patient survival rates in chronic hepatitis C virus infection in Eritrea by Mr. Micheal Berhe

4. Current and Future Environmental Suitability to Anopheles Mosquitoes in Zoba Maekel, Eritrea Species Distribution modelling using Maxent, 2023 by Mr. Filmon Ghebreyesus

5. Using the WHO individual near-miss case review (NMCR) cycle to improve quality of emergency obstetric car and maternal outcome in Keren Hospital Eritrea: an interrupted time series analysis by Mr. Henos Kiflom

6. Undetectable HIV viral load and its determinants among HIV patients under ART in Maekel Region, Eritrea by Ms. Hanna Tesfaselassie

7. Prediction of cardiovascular disease risks and risk factors assessment in people aged above 40 years in Keren town, Eritrea, 2021 by Mr. Micheal Teklay

8. Survival status and determinants of unsuccessful treatment outcome among multi-drug resistant Tuberculosis patients in Merhano Hospital, Eritrea: A cohort study by Dr. Fitsum Kibreab 

9. Quality of life of dermatology outpatients and its associated factors in Halibet National Referral hospital, Asmara, Eritrea, a cross-sectional study by Mr. Nuru Abdu 

 

Additionally, for the first time two research papers were presented in poster presentation format. Those were;

 

1. Knowledge, attitude and practice of Community Health Workers (CHWs) on malaria prevention and control in Emni Hayl Subzone, Eritrea by Mr. Habtom Kidane

2. Species diversity, distribution and behavior of potential malaria vectors in Anseba Region, Eritrea by Mr. Mensur Yenus


 

Engaging with Future Challenges

Recognizing the evolving landscape of public health, the conference featured two keynote speeches that delved into critical future challenges:

1. Artificial Intelligence in Public Health: Engineer Negusse Berhane discussed the potential applications of AI in healthcare, highlighting both its benefits and risks.

2. Climate Change and Health: Mr. Tekie Abraha explored the impacts of climate change on health and disease patterns, particularly in the context of Eritrea.

The conference provided a platform for critical discussion and knowledge sharing among public health professionals. The diverse range of research topics and the active participation of young researchers were particularly noteworthy. As the field of public health continues to evolve, ERIPHA remains committed to fostering research, innovation, and collaboration to address the challenges of the future.

Membership is open to all individuals above 18 years of age who fulfill the requirements of the Association as stated in this Constitution. There are three categories of members as identified hereunder. Membership is approved only after filling the appropriate form and paying the required fee.
