ERIPHA successfully conducted Continuous Professional Education (CPE)





The Eritrean Public Health Association (ERIPHA) conducted its first Continuous Professional Education Program on 28 December 2024 at the National Blood Transfusion Center (NBTC) 's conference hall.

The Program had 4 experts with commendable experience in their respective fields present subject matters that are related to Public Health. Dr. Zerabruk tesfamariam, President of the association gave opening remarks on the program highlighting the significance of the event and the work the association has been doing to elevate the capacity of its members. Following DR Zerabruk’s remarks moderated by Mr. Filimon ghebreyesus the first two presenters were given the floor.

 

Dr. Seife

Dr. Saife Berhe, Executive director of Andiamo exploration gave an hour-long lecture on Environmental Risk Assessment. Dr. Saife outlined the principles and the types of Environmental Risk Assessment. He shared his experience with Environmental Risk assessment activities carried out by mining companies in Eritrea. He further outlined the roles of public health professionals in Environmental Risk Assessment and the different tools of remote sensing the professionals need to master. He finished his presentation by giving some take-home messages to the professionals and emphasized the need to be updated with the current technology. Dr Saife answered Questions regarding Environmental laws in Eritrea and the application of GIS from the audience at the end of his presentation.

 

Dr. Seife

Dr. Eyoab Iyasu, an assistant professor at the Mai-Nefhi College of Sciences,  presented a lecture on genomic epidemiology. In his lecture, Dr. Eyoab addressed the common misunderstanding among health professionals towards the field of genetics and the historical development of the field. Dr. Eyoab highlighted the role of genetics in population health and the Human Genome Map project and its impact on previously established knowledge. He also shared examples that resulted in human loss and drug withdrawal in some countries due to the genetic variance of their population. Dr. Eyoab shared his work on mapping the Mycobacterium tuberculosis project in East Africa and the project's contribution to the scientific community. Finally, Dr. Eyoab elaborated on a Question from the audience concerning the advantages and disadvantages of genetic variation.

Dr. Fistum kibreab, From the Health Research and Resources Center Division of the Ministry of Health, gave a lecture on Academic Writing and Referencing. In his discourse, Dr. Fistum explained in detail the structures of the Academic thesis and the steps, and principles that needed to be followed. He talked about the notion of "Publish and/or Perish" and the need for public health professionals to engage in research works. He further elaborated on tools that facilitate the process of writing and referencing. Dr. Fistum emphasized the issue of "plagiarism" and the consequences researchers can face if they haven't addressed it properly. At the end of his presentation, Dr. Fistum answered questions from the audience on his presentation.

The last discussion of the day, Research Publication was presented by Mr. Yonatan M. Andemeskel (MSc, Anesthesia) lecturer at Orotta College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Mr Yonatan talked about manuscript preparation and responding to the reviewer's comments. He also iterated on the ethical principles researchers need to follow and issues regarding plagiarism. he explained journal matrices like impact factor, keyword, and review duration. He provided audiences with helpful tools and tips on finding proper journals by subject matter. The event ended by handing out a certificate of appreciation to speakers and a certificate of participation to audiences. Around 50 Public health professionals participated in this event live and the whole program was recorded for those in zones. This event was graced by professionals from pharmacy, Medicine, and Laboratory as well.

The technical committee appreciates the invaluable contribution of Andiamo exploration and the National Blood Transfusion Center for their financial and logistical assistance. The next upcoming event on the ERI-PHA calendar is the Second General Assembly Congress which is scheduled to be carried out at the end of January 2025.

Membership is open to all individuals above 18 years of age who fulfill the requirements of the Association as stated in this Constitution. There are three categories of members as identified hereunder. Membership is approved only after filling the appropriate form and paying the required fee.
